Pure fun {Great Falls Photographer}

So I’ve recently been doing some shoots with, and for, women.  I shared a little bit about this here.    I have thoroughly enjoyed working with so many great people for this.  From the talented make up artist, Erin Weninger, the amazing hair stylist, Beth Douglass, to all the beautiful women who’ve been able to participate, it’s been so much fun!

Here’s a few from Heather’s session!  Hair by Beth Douglass and make up by Erin Weninger.  Both of these ladies can be found at Salon Off Broadway in Helena (442-4140).

More personal postings {Great Falls Photographer}

I realize that I’ve posted a ton of personal stuff here recently.  And that’s because, well, I’ve really tried harder to make sure I’m shooting my own kids.  Their quirks, their sucesses and failures, their everyday moments.  Since moving to Great Falls, I’ve been so much more aware of how quickly kids grow and life changes.  I want to document their lives.  Even if they think it’s annoying!

So yesterday I was trying to test out one of my lenses.  (A Canon 50 1.4, in case you care.)  It’s been giving me some grief lately and I wanted to compare it to a couple other lenses in my bag.  Mainly, the Canon 85 1.8.    So these shots were nothing more than plopping my girls on (yes, on) the kitchen table and letting them be goofy.  It really got me thinking…. Wouldn’t you much rather have images of your kids being WHO they are, then images of your kids sitting all perfectly and saying the “C” word.  C’mon, you know what word I’m talking about here.  Sure, you want the smile.  All parents do.  But you want the REAL smile, right?  You want the cute little grin right?  The sly little look in their eyes.  The soulful look when they are caught in thought.  The little things they do that let their inside shine right through to the outside.

I love that my sweet girl can go from completely serene and peaceful to absolutely goofy in no time flat. And who knows, these images might just come in handy someday in about 10 years.;)

What Wind Looks Like {Great Falls Photographer}

I know I’ve mentioned before how amazing the photographers in Montana are, but I’ll say it again! I’m so overwhelmed with the talented and creative people right here in Big Sky Country. And not only talented, but genuinely wonderful, caring, and fun people! I love being able to team up with just a few of them and work on this little project we can “What _____ Looks Like”, where we each fill in the blank each month with whatever we’d like to feature.
One of the talented photographers in the group is Shannon Hollman, of Shannon Hollman Photography in Kalispell. Her blog is always full of inspirational images! Check out her awesomeness here.

Billy Graham once said, “I’ve seen the effects of the wind, but I’ve never seen the wind.”   While I love the statement and Reverend Billy Graham’s true meaning behind it, that statement has taken on new meaning for me since we moved our family and my business to Great Falls. If you live here you know exactly what I mean. If you don’t, well then, take a look.

This photo shoot of my sweet little began like many others.  I got a new toy in the mail and wanted to figure out all the technical details of how exactly to use it to get the intended results.  What is it, you ask?   An expodisc!!  It’s a little round disc that allows my camera to capture all the light through these little prisms, then I just set a custom white balance and done!  It’s a lovely little thing that has already saved me a ton of time in post processing!  Now I realize that I just confirmed your suspicions.   It’s true, I am a nerd.  So, I got the expodisc in the mail (and for your photographers who are wondering, I got the portrait one) and swooped up little Miss AJ and off we went.  Ok, ok, I did change her out of the tights with a swimming suit outfit she’d picked for herself and into something more appropriate for pictures first, but then off we went.

One step out of the car and I knew this was going to be difficult.  Partly because I realized I didn’t bring my reinforcements, aka Mr. Pez or Mrs. Smarties. ;)  But mostly due to the insane, steady wind.  But we pressed on.  And while  it wasn’t the most pleasant, but it was FUN!      I’m so thankful to have these images of my girl, making the best of a down right miserable situation with a smile on her face!

10 on 10 {Great Falls Photographer}

I am going to be completely honest with you. I have what’s known as adult onset procrastination disorder. Growing up I was never a down to the wire person. I chose my outfit the night before school, always completed assignments early, when mom left for work in the morning and warned the dishes had better be done before she got home….I did them right after she walked out the door. So of course when I joined this group of other photographers who post images of their day on the 10th of every month. I figured I’d have each months blog post all done and ready to post days, even weeks in advance! Well,the truth is, I think I like the pressure, that sense of urgency, the gamble of getting it in just under the wire. And so I chose to document our Easter Day for this months post. It’s a no brainer right? Everyone takes pictures of their family on Easter! Maybe, maybe not. I really have not done a good job of documenting our family holidays for the last few years. So I’m actually really grateful for my procrastinating tendencies because I captured real (and by real I mean not taken with my iphone) pictures of my family, celebrating the resurrection of our Lord.

My crew. All clean and shiny and ready for church!

Church. Ok, I’ll admit, this was awkward. I debated on whether or not to bring my camera into the church. It seems kind of odd to pop that bad boy out and start snapping during the middle of an Easter service, or any service for that matter. But I figured if I got into trouble, the pastor would probably just give me a swirly, a wet willy, or worse yet….a wedgie. You see that guy up in front? He’s my brother. And now that swirly, wet willy, wedgie, statement makes perfect sense, right?;)
This year we decided on an Easter dinner or supper or whatever you happen to call the meal that you have around 5 or 6 in the evening, instead of our normal lunchtime affair. So that left us with the afternoon to enjoy the glorious Montana day. Dawson, being the great big brother he is, blew endless bubbles while Avery tried to catch each and every one.
I’m actually not sure what Grace was doing here, but she was outside during the game of bubble chase and I was able to snap this shot of her.

The boy cousins. And no, no one called each other and asked if they were wearing their white button up shirt and jeans. But it sure worked out well for an impromptu photo session on the couch.

Logan bringing out the giggles with little Mr. P.
And this is a shot of some of the food. The breads and devilled eggs got their own area. Pretty traditional Easter fare. Ham, cheesy potato casserole, fruit, corn salad (sounds weird, but so good!) Here’s the recipe so you can try it.
2 cans of corn drained
1/2 c of mayo (not miracle whip)
1/2 onion diced (really small so the kids don’t know it’s in there)
1 c shredded cheddar cheese
Mix all of that together and refrigerate for a couple of hours. Before serving crush a bag of chili cheese fritos and mix them in. Seriously, it’s good. Try it.
After dinner/supper, little Miss E hanging with her dad.

And then the fun began. My mom arranged some evening entertainment for the kids. Yes, I said kids. And no the next picture is not of a kid. It is, however, my husband.;)

I’ll explain this game, my mom took plastic cups, cut off the rims, cut off the end of a balloon, tied a knot in the balloon, and put the balloon over the cup. Then you take a mini marshmellow, put it in to the tied end of the balloon, pull back, and launch it. Very fun. Very, very, fun.

The whole clan of cousins from the Engel side.

Mr. P, just hanging out. With some fine looking spectacles. This kid brings a smile to my face everytime I see him. Truly a litle spirit that lights up this world.Another really fun game. The side bump isn’t part of the game, it was part of the victory dance.;)But I will explain this game, too, since it’s so easy and everyone really enjoyed it. Take a paper plate (my mom used the foamish, plasticy kind) and glue it to a paint stir stick. This is the paddle. Blow up balloons. Drag a hose down the center of the yard to act as the divider. Start hitting the balloon back and forth. Kind of like balloon tennis/volleyball/badmitten.

That concludes the longest post ever written on this blog. Thanks for sticking with me and sharing in my 10 on 10 project. Take a minute and visit my friend, Carey Pace to see what her April edition of 10 on 10 is all about!

Newly Born {great falls newborn photographer}

Have I told you lately that I love my job?  I do.  Especially on days when I get to snuggle up precious, tiny, little bundles, and hang out with their wonderful families.  I mentioned here that my family and my business has moved from Helena to Great Falls, but I was more than happy to make the drive back to Helena to meet the newest member of the “T” family.
